In collaboration with Myriad Genetics, Torrey Mesa Research Institute (TMRI), a subsidiary of Syngenta, generated random fragment sequence information estimated to cover more than 99% of rice genes.  The majority of this sequence information is mapped to the rice physical and genetic maps, and the sequence information is in about 42,000 contigs ranging from 5 Kbp to approximately 150 Kbp.  Most known maize, wheat and barley genes have significant homologs that can be found in this rice genome database.  As part of the Syngenta rice genome project, Syngenta scientists published their first major analysis of the rice genome in the April 5, 2002 edition of Science (Goff, et al., 296:92-100 (2002).

TMRI has closed its doors, but TMRIs affiliate, SBI, is making the rice genome sequence available to external scientists.  Please send requests for a CD copy of the rice genome sequence to stephen.goff@syngenta.com.
